What is Sediment?

February 17, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Sediment is made up of solid particles that are a byproduct of wine making, such as dead yeast cells or fragments of grape seeds or skins. They are harmless if consumed, but the wine drinking experience can be more enjoyable if you decant a wine to remove the sediment. Don’t have a decanter? Simply pour the wine through cheesecloth or a coffee filter.

How to Pick the Perfect Bottle of Wine

February 12, 2009 | Leave a Comment

Do you dread choosing a bottle of wine to go with dinner? Do you toil over the “rules” of red wine with meat and white wine with fish? What about chicken or stir fry or even tacos? If you are having guests, what will they enjoy? The best advice? Chill out.

The reason you are buying wine in the first place is to add an enjoyable element to your dining experience. Choose a wine that sounds appealing to you. Start simple. Red or white? Next, what type (or varietal) do you like? Are you a fan of the bolder, spicier varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz or do you prefer the crisp, sweet flavors found in Riesling and Pinot Gris? Some popular medium bodied favorites that possess balance and just the right amount of flavor are reds: Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Cabernet Franc, and Barbera. As for the whites: Sauvignon Blanc, Gewurztraminer, and Viognier. A sparkling wine is nice too. The idea here is not to overpower your guests with a wine that is too bold and puckery or perfumy and sweet. Light to medium bodied wines tend to be big people pleasers so whether they are being served on their own or paired with food, it will be a hit!

A little education goes a long way so if you think to, really savor the first few sips from your glass. Decide what it is you are enjoying about the wine. Leave the floor open to discussion with guests, after all you may have a connoisseur in the midst and could really share some fun thoughts and experiences with wine they have enjoyed. You may be intrigued to purchase a bottle of Tempranillo (Spanish red) mentioned by so-and-so’s girlfriend for your next get together or your own personal enjoyment. Take the fear and disappointment out of wine shopping. Try something new and exciting and have some fun!
